The day starts off pleasantly enough, as we drive from Dodington, Somerset through the Exmoor National Park and on to Dorset to walk down the very steep pebbled path through the impossibly pretty village of Clovelly.
However arriving at Charlestown late afternoon in Cornwall, this is definitely trumped when we see the TV series of Poldark is filming in the Harbour, complete with heartthrob Aidan Turner!
There is a constant flow of people, locals and fans, cars and trucks streaming up and down the road to the Harbour. Along the cliff face overlooking the beach people are crammed hoping to get a glimpse of the action – and Turner.
The village is a hub of activity and the famous tall ships have been decked out to transport them back in time. Filming of this second series started in Cornwall earlier in September and will continue for a further few weeks before moving to other locations.
Charlestown is a village and port on the south coast of Cornwall, and unlike many surrounding towns has remained relatively unchanged. The Harbour is Grade II listed and is ready made for an 18th century setting with its Tall Ships.
I have to say there isn’t a lot of action to be seen, but it is the atmosphere that counts and there is plenty. Such a beautiful setting as well as all the crowds. We see a scene being filmed of Poldark and crew rowing out to sea, and then as night starts to fall filming begins on one of the Tall Ships.
Gradually we draw ourselves away, have a quick drink at the pub across from the action and head back to our rented cottage up the road to watch Australia versus England in the Rugby World Cup (we won!).
Before I finish this post, it would be remiss not to post a few pictures of the possibly pretty village of Clovelly, much of it dating back to the 14th century, from earlier in the day. The village was the home of Charles Kingsley in his youth and he returned many times as an adult. It was said to have inspired his children’s classic The Water Babies.
